Thistle Hill Guest House, Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, is an absolutely divine place to stay. Set well back from the road, and nestled amid 25 acres of gardens, native trees, dams and vines, with the actual guesthouse surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. There are 6 guest rooms and also Lavender Cottage, which is self-contained accommodation and perfect for two couples. Our hosts Carol and Peter could not have been more welcoming and are a mine of information about all that is happening in the Valley.
Our Weekend Escape was centered around the Piggs Peake Winery, Pokolbin, New Release Night, where all their latest vintage wines were on show.
The Beltree restaurant was the perfect place for lunch. A simply styled trattoria featuring contemporary Italian cuisine. There is a roaring log fire, warm, friendly, informative service, and a wine list focusing on Italian varietals. Thankyou to Carol and Peter for this recommendation. Beltree makes its own ciabatta, and in fact grows everything that it can. Recommended dishes are the 12 hour lamb shoulder served in its own Le Cruset pot and the Roast Balsamic Duck.266 Hermitage Road Pokolbin
Margan Restaurant & Winery was yet another recommendation, this time from friends.
Margan’s menus are composed around what they are harvesting from their one acre kitchen garden and orchard, so everything has a true seasonal focus. They also produce their own olives, free range eggs, honey and lamb. They even offer fresh filtered rainwater at the table – and not forgetting the wines, of course they are produced from the grapes in their vineyard.
We enjoyed a wonderfully innovative ‘tasting’ menu, all the dishes were entree size so, with four of us, we were able to sample quite a number of dishes and many with matched Margan wine.1238 Milbrodale Road, Broke
